The William S. Ballenger Papers (#82-127) span 1969-1982. The bulk of materials concern Michigan Republican Party activities, especially as relates to campaigns. William G. Milliken's 1978 campaign for Michigan governor and Ballenger's 1982 campaign for the U.S. Senate are particularly well represented in the collection. Researchers interested in the latter campaign are encouraged to also check MSS 86-20, which complements this collection. Materials in this collection include correspondence, often with supporters and among Republican Party members; reports, including polling analysis and Federal Election Commission reports; typed copies of speeches by Ballenger, Milliken and others; press releases; position statements; newspaper clippings; television and radio transcripts; photographs and campaign literature on various Republican candidates. Republican conventions, conferences, legislative dinners and fundraising strategies are represented in the collection. Files on "issue papers" include Republican position statements and research materials, such as reports and newspaper clippings that relate to the issue in question. Two files document Ballenger's 1982 campaign walk across Michigan.

William S. Ballenger III was born in Flint, Mich. on Mar. 28, 1941. He graduated from Princeton University, magna cum laude, in 1962. He then returned to Michigan and served as the Republican State Central Committee's Director of Research and then as Chairman of the Shiawassee County Republican Party. He married Virginia Lee "Bunny" Woodward in 1964, and the couple have had two children - Josephine and William S. the Fifth.
